GOtv MAX Cup: Eagles-Atletico clash thrills fans

Europa League champions  Atletico Madrid are  set for the trip to Uyo  for the the  inaugural GOtv MAX Cup clash against  the Super Eagles at Akpabio Stadium on May 22.

Los Rojiblancos pounded Marseille 3-0 in Lyon on Wednesday to win the Europe’s second tier tournament for the third time (2010, 2012, 2018).

Meanwhile, Uyo fans are gearing up for the  encounter  as organisers heighten their  preparations  ahead of  the La Liga giants’ visit to the city, which has hosted the Eagles on many occasions.

Some of the fans expressed their  delight  at the opportunity to see three-time UEFA Champions League runners-up (1974, 2014, 2016)   Atletico  in action against World Cup-bound Eagles on home soil.

  “I am very happy that Atletico  are  coming to Uyo. I would definitely be at the stadium to watch the team. I pray and hope that the  Eagles give a good account of themselves,” one of the fans  Inyang Bassey  said.

 Another fan Sunday Ndifreke praised  MultiChoice for facilitating the visit of a team of Atletico Madrid’s profile, adding that he is an admirer of their manager  Diego Simeone.

 Samuel Okon, a self-confessed Atletico fan, said the GOtv MAX Cup represents a dream fulfilled. According to him, he will be going to watch the match with his brother, who is also a supporter of the Spanish team.

The NFF released a list of 23 players for the match on Thursday.

Aberdeen’s  Chidiebere Nwakali, Lokomotiv Plovdiv’s Musa Muhammed, Maastricht’s Kelechi Nwakali, Austrian Wien’s Alhassan Ibrahim, Norway-based  Usman Mohammed and Kasimpasa’s Emem Eduok top the list dominated by local stars including Olorunleke Ojo, Tosin Omoyele, Dayo Ojo, Destiny Ashadi, Ikouwem Utin, Ebube Duru  and Stanley Okoroma.
