Over 200 badminton players from 23 countries are expected to feature in the 2018 Lagos International Badminton Classics at the Mobolaji Johnson Sports Complex, Rowe Park, Lagos from July 18 to 21.

The competition, which is in its fourth edition, has a prize money of $25,000.

President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria Francis Orbih told our correspondent that there would be competition in five categories – the men and women singles, men and women doubles and the mixed doubles.

Orbih, who promised that the competition would be bigger than the previous editions, said the tournament will attract players from India, Malaysia, Australia and England as well as African countries like Ghana, Uganda and South Africa.

He said entries from over 200 players have been received for the tournament, which is a Badminton World Federation-certified event.

He said, “We expect that the competition will be a good test for our players and it will also help to improve their world rankings because they will face top-ranked players from around the world.

“We expect that the competition this year will be more competitive than the previous ones because the prize money for this year is more than the previous ones. Last year, we didn’t have up to the number of entries we have this year – that should also make it competitive than last year.

“Our players have participated in various competitions this year and we are eager to see how they will perform in their first major competition at home this year.”
